Hawkesley, Pool Farm and Primrose Hill are three interconnected estates on the margins of South Birmingham. Crime, poor housing stock and other environmental conditions have resulted in a high rate of housing turnover and family mobility. This in turn has destabilised the local community and further depressed local conditions. Despite a population of over 10,000, there are no banks or supermarkets in the area. There is not even a launderette. There is little or no direct employment available and public transport is patchy. This means that the local community faces the compound problem of having little available locally, and living in isolation from those facilities and opportunities available elsewhere in the city. The community does not have a strong voice. This is partly due to the high turnover but also to a historical lack of investment in community infrastructure in the area.
